The World's Toughest Race
With a distance of 4,500km, this is one of the toughest races on the planet. Crews are all competing entirely self supported and unassisted from the start in California until finishing in Hawaii. The thing about rowing an ocean is there in NO turning back and therefore NO choice but to work through the pain and the suffering with your team. We are all faced with a choice - do I stay a prisoner and hide in the cabin or do I lean into this and let it wash through you. And then.... there is a wonderful moment when you finally accept the new reality that it will just be over when it's over. All of a sudden you are free, free from the shackles of your own mind and anything is possible.
The Ups
Laughter settled the fear, support dried the tears and the ocean sent us on an adventure that we will cherish forever. We paused for the sunrises and sunsets, surfed 40 foot waves, celebrated a birthday, daily sunset reggae sessions, listened to music, podcasts and audio books and we also managed to pick up a race record of travelling the furthest in a 24 hour period. 170km reaching 13.7knot (25.4kph)
The Down
We faced many adversities right from the start where the weather was terrible coming with high winds and huge wave all while we loss battery power in our first night and our navigation systems failed which sent us going in the wrong direction. We rowed 1 hour on 20mins off for the first 48 hours after which we fixed the navigation and we were in catch up mode for the remainder of the race. We had to deploy of para anchor 3 times, we had a close shave with a container ship and in our final days were hit by Storm Calvin which brought rain, 50know winds. All while our hands, our bum and our moral deteriorated. At times we couldn't see the end...
The Lessons
The team came together bonded as brothers championing one another during the tough times and cherishing the incredible adventure we were on. We became stronger friends from when we started and stronger human beings. The lessons we learnt from this adventure will carry with us forever. Nothing comes without hard work, dedication requires mental resilience and consistency is king. Trust in your team and there is power in holding your words. Finally just sign up to something impossible, because your body is pretty robust when you want it to be
